You have heard that if you are a photographer you should be blogging. You have seen more and more shooters with blogs. Heck, you've probably even started one yourself! But do you know why a blog is so important, and the most important things you need to do to make sure it is worth the time?

So, you may already have a blog, or you may be considering one. Either way, start talking about the reasons why bloggers are so important to photographers.

The Reasons Why Blogging Is So Important For Photographers

Photography is a service, and a personal one at that. Your customers are letting you into their lives, and trusting you with some very big moments. The more you can give them a reason to feel comfortable with hiring you, the better they will be.

A blog is the perfect tool to do just that. It gives you the opportunity to show who you are, why you are a photographer, and what value you can provide to a potential client. This gives them a look at your motivations and how you treat your customers - information that will be important to their decision.
And, of course, it lets them see your latest and greatest work! When you are just starting out (as in, during the first 5 - 10 years of you as a shooter) you are probably going to improve your job a lot faster. Portfolio sites have a tendency to be static, and many photographers neglect to update them regularly. A blog ensures that potential customers are seeing your latest (and potentially best) images. This ensures that they are familiar with your current shooting style, with a tendency to evolve!

Blogs are also better for SEO than portfolio sites, as they have frequent updates and lots of tasty content (Google loooooooves tasty content). A well-maintained and frequently updated blog can completely shoot up search rankings!

Another benefit is that blogs are a very good way for your customers to share the images you take! People like to see their photos on their photographer's blog, and will share the link with all their family and friends. Um… .long-mouth marketing word !! Your customers may also ask you if they create a blog, they are so excited that they will be featured. Take time to create great posts for your customers, share why you enjoyed working with them, and they love the experience, and will spread the word with you. win !!

At the core, a blog is going to give you the start to establish your personal brand. You can find your unique voice for the blog's narrative style. This is different from a portfolio, photo-sharing sites like Flickr, or social networking sites like Facebook. Your personal brand is what will make you unique. It is super valuable.

Things For Photographers To Blog About

There are many things you can blog about, once you start getting into it, you will find that you are always coming up with new topics!

These are some ideas we've come up with, but the sky's the limit:

  • Recent work: Weddings, portrait sessions, travel portraits, landscape portraits, whatever you are shooting at the time
  • Your most interesting work: You can draw pictures from your archives to share
  • Personal Experience: For great examples of personal blogging check out The Pioneer Woman or Tara Whitney
  • Answers to Frequently Asked Questions: Help your readers get the information they need with some great FAQ posts! Create valuable content for them!
  • Adventures: People love to live vibrantly through their favorite bloggers, so take them on their adventures!
  • Why you love photography: Let them see your inspirations, and they will feel more connected to you
  • Promotions in your studio: You give blog readers a special discount, and make sure they know about any promotions, so they feel that it is valuable to follow your blog!
  • How you got started in photography: Your story can help them understand who you are as a shooter.
  • Behind the Scenes: Everyone loves to see how magic happens!

Now, take some time to brainstorm (my favorite word, btw) on your own topic ideas. Just think about your audience, and what kind of content they will find interesting, relevant and valuable, and go for it!
